Brief description on how to use a tap and die set. *Note* This hole did not go all the way through if it does make sure to run the tap passed the end of the hole. Also instead of using an oversized bolt they sell an attachment that pulls the old bolt out. You just drill a small hole through the bolt, screw the special tip in the hole and remove the old bolt. If using this method it may be nessisary to run the correct size tap in the hole just to renew the threads not to cut a larger hole.
Some things I picked up this weekend from yard sales and flea markets. 500ft wire spool – , Black and Decker new circular saw – , Antique tap and die set – , Russian Hat – , McCoy blue vase – , Hat pin and other pins – 50 cents, Tupperware hamburger set .
This video demonstrates a typical offset machining operation where an absolutely rigid spindle lock is needed for successful completion. Any rotation of the part during deep drilling or tapping would result in binding or shattering of the tool and perhaps a ruined part. The situation will be even more critical when the trunnion table is installed and the offsets can be much greater. The latest spindle lock can generate 105 FT-lbs of torque at the spindle.
After getting no help from Walmart, Hank decides to call up a Target store, and inquire about WD-40 and a tap & die set there. He also gets no help from them and tells the employee “helping” him what he thinks of her.
Links to products inside … Always on the lookout for the perfect flash bracket, I’ve been tinkering many an hour in the garage and cutting, drilling and bending metal. After testing in the field, I repeat and rinse but am also on the lookout for commercially available solutions that work as well or better. 3 major factors skew our bias. The bracket should be: 1. Strong, secure and inspire confidence 2. super easy/fast to setup/use in the field 2. Smaller & lighter = better Bonus points for on-access flash/umbrella mount, captive screws and flexibility. Here’s a quick 5 minute review of 3 dual-flash brackets: The Brewer bracket, Morris and our very own custom jobby. Brewer Bracket (bit.ly The Brewer will hit the pocket the hardest, and remember you’ll also have to add a swivel mount to the kit adding weight and expense. Morris Umbrella Swivel (bit.ly The Morris is a relatively inexpensive option but really needs to be modded to play nice. [Addendum to the video: I forgot to mention the 1/4-20 holes on the right side of the bar aren’t there as purchased; you have to drill and tap them yourself). DQ Custom Bracket. Not currently available for purchase, but gives ideas to move forward to better design and usability. So who wins? Take a look, then grab your drill, Dremel, tap & die set and prepare to get dirty More lighting goodness on the blog at www.dqstudios.com
Gotta love my tap and die set. I’ve fixed so much with it. The aluminum engine parts shined up nicely. All the ferrous parts will be painted gloss engine black.
